On June 5, 2008, CCTEC hosted a Startup Boot Camp event at the Cornell campus in Ithaca. Registrants learned the basics of starting a business from experienced professionals. Panelists shared their insights in the areas of starting life science and physical science companies, as well as discussing operational issues, including policies and legal considerations. Panel members included entrepreneurs, attorneys, venture capitalists, inventors, and academic representatives.
During lunch, keynote speaker John Alexander, Founder of The CBORD Group, discussed his entrepreneurial experiences. As a Cornell inventor, he started a company based on foodservice systems. Today, the company supports many colleges and universities, healthcare facilities, continuing care facilities, restaurants, and supermarkets. The CBORD Group was recently sold to Roper Industries for $367 million. John offered suggestions to attendees and emphasized the importance of risk taking when starting a company.
Throughout the day, attendees were able to meet and connect with other entrepreneurs. A cocktail reception and sit down dinner created a welcoming environment for guests to gather more information and contacts that will help them when starting a company.
